Higher Diploma in General Nursing (Enrolled Nurses)

Programme Aims

The Programme aims at preparing students: (1) to achieve the core competencies of an Enrolled Nurse (General) to provide the public with safe and effective care; and (2) to develop the generic skills for all-roundedness of the students, such as self-directed learning and problem-solving skills in support of their care to clients of all ages and their families.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the Programme, the graduate will be expected to:

  • have acquired the essential knowledge and skills for enrollment with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong as Enrolled Nurse (General);
  • contribute to health education and health promotion activities for the individual, families, groups and the community to prevent illness as well as to restore, maintain and promote health;
  • provide safe, ethical, professional and quality client-oriented care through contributing to health assessments, planning, implementation and evaluation of care in collaboration with the Registered Nurse and other health care team members;
  • show a caring attitude and provide care in a holistic manner;
  • demonstrate personal and professional development in attributes of all-roundedness, such as abilities in problem solving, critical and creative thinking, self-directed learning, sense of social responsibility, team work as well as communication and interpersonal skills; and
  • engage in self-reflective practice and support nursing research and evidence-based practice for improvement of care.

Curriculum Design

This curriculum is designed to structure the systematic development of competent Enrolled Nurses. In the Programme, students’ learning progresses from fundamental to complex and from a focus on the care of the individual to that of families and communities. The care perspective is expanding from primary to tertiary level through junior to senior years of study. Courses taught in the Junior Year aim at providing a solid foundation of basic knowledge and skills. The teaching in the Senior Year expands the basic nursing knowledge to specialty nursing so as to prepare students to meet the competence requirements of a professional Enrolled Nurse. The Programme also prepares students with broad and transferable skills that enable them to tackle nursing problems more effectively throughout their professional life. Award Graduates will be awarded the Higher Diploma in General Nursing (Enrolled Nurses) upon successful completion of the Programme. They will be eligible to register as Enrolled Nurse under the Nursing Council of Hong Kong and advance in the career by taking up further studies or conversion programme.
Admission Requirements
Applicants are required to fulfill these minimum requirements:
  • aged at least 18 before entry to the Programme,
  • a Hong Kong permanent resident, and
  • fluent in oral Cantonese.
For HKAL candidates
- Passed 5 subjects in HKCEE, including English (Grade D/ 3), Chinese, Mathematics, and preferably Biology.
For HKDSE candidates
Obtained Level 2 or above in 3 core subjects and 2 elective subjects, including Chinese Language, English Language and Mathematics.
Equivalent qualifications.
